sheppards pie

Sheppard’s Pie is another recipe my hubby requested. I thought it was odd, because I think of it as a “winter food” -or at least when it’s below 90. I made it nonetheless…

It actually turned out to be a decent sumer food, since most of it is done on a stovetop. You really only have to turn the oven on to melt the cheese.

I just started thinking… do you really need to see pictures of beef cooking? I mean, we all know what “browned”looks like, right? Yes…

So,  I will add some other captions today.

This here is my saute pan I have had since 1996. I bought a set with a $100 Walmart gift card.It was $89.99. That was a lot back then. They have held up real nice, too. I really should know the brand…but I don’t.Sorry.

Oh,by the way- that’s browned meat in there, with some flour, ketchup and curry powder…

This here is that same browned meat placed in a glass Pyrex pie plate. I used to have a real nice stoneware one. But, I am pretty sure it broke. Bummer.

So, I cheated and nuked some frozen peas and carrots. Then I tossed them in a tablespoon of ranch dressing.

I wanted to add corn. But- I remembered corn too late. I think I was drinking wine. Whoops.

This is my favorite silicon spatula. It’s from the dollar store. I like it so much, I ended up buying a “friend” for it.

This is my favorite dishtowel. Next to that is some Sheppard’s Pie. With melted cheese….mmm,melted cheese.

sheppards pie
Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 4 tablespoons diced onion
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup frozen (cooked) peas and carrots
  • 1 cup corn
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2-3 teaspoons curry powder
  • 3/4 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese
  • salt/pepper
  • For the potatoes:
  • 4 medium potatoes, cubed
  • 3 tbs butter
  • 1/4 c milk
  • salt, pepper
Instructions
  1. Place the potatoes on a pot of water and boil until tender.
  2. While the potatoes are cooking, cook the onion in the butter and saute until translucent.
  3. Add the meat, brown and drain.
  4. To the meat, add flour, ketchup, curry powder, and beef broth.
  5. Cook until thick over medium heat.
  6. Place in a 9″ pie plate.
  7. Mash the potatoes with the butter, milk, salt and pepper.
  8. Place a layer of peas and carrots over the meat, then top with the corn.
  9. Finally spoon the potatoes on top, and sprinkle cheese on top of potatoes.
  10. Bake at 350 until cheese melts. (15 minutes or so)
