tofu….that’s tasty

I used to be the manager of a health food store…for 14years. Before that, I worked in another health food store that had a little deli. We used to make these, and mmm they are good.

get some good ol‘ EXTRA FIRM tofu

It looks and acts like a sponge- you want to GENTLY press out as much water as possible

place it in a container (I found these at walmart, they are the PERFECT size for tofu) sprinkle some kosher salt all over it and some garlic powder, too.

Make sure there is a paper towel around the tofu and put another container on top…

weigh it down with a brick or cans of food and place it back in the fridge for 2 days…

dice it into nice squares like this and coat with the following
1/4 c soy sauce
dash Worcestershire
a wooden spoon of sesame oil
tbs honey
pour over the tofu and arrange on a parchment lined baking sheet
sprinkle with panko bread crumbs and sesame seeds
bake at 425 for 35-40 min or until they look nice and dried up and toasty!

they are yummy as is or dipped in plum sauce or duck sauce or ketchup or ranch…. you get the drift!

a while back I purchased tofu thinking I surely could do something with it. I couldn't and it went bad. Now that I know how to prep the tofu for use I may have to give it another whirl!

This looks really good; my family will actually eat tofu without any prodding, but I could always use a new way to prepare it. Thanks!

Wow I never ever thought of baking it…now I am going to try that and see if I like it any better. I eat tofu, just have never really enjoyed how it comes out at home. Thanks for the recipe.

I am not easily inspired…these days, but wanted to let you know my tofu is in the fridge with the weight on it. And I am really excited to see what it tastes like when its baked.

You will have to let me know what ya think! Once pressed and baked, it develops a more chewy, “meaty” texture! (I am not sure if it’s right to describe tofu as “meaty” but I didn’t kow any other adjective!) lol!

Here, back to let you know, as you requested. I had the recipe all printed out, but when I got home DD was there (shes never home) and wanted to chat. So I rushed in to fix dinner, she had a special request, so as I was doing what I had planned, also what she had ask for, and I was rushing. Once I got the two things in the oven, I remember the tofu. Ha Ha which was for me! So again I rushed forgetting where I put the recipe, thankful I remember the specific items even though I could’nt remember the amounts. I LOVED IT. So I will thy again, on my OWN time, with the recipe at hand. At lease I know where it is now. And FYI I had a few pieces left so I ate them with my salad the next day. I think it tasted better cold, which surprised me. Who knew? Thanks again for the recipe. I understand the challenges of coming up with a good recipe. Again, Thanks. Sue

I am so happy you liked it- It’s a very flexible recipe, tofu as you know can take on many flavors! It is good cold! My daughter will sneek it out of the fridge! yum! Enjoy! And thank you for the update!
