best macaroni and cheese ever!

I have had this recipe for years,  and in my opinion, it is the yummiest! It may take a few extra steps, but… those boxed mixes are sooo….boxy. EW!

In a sauce pan melt 1/2 stick of butter, add 1/2 c flour to make a paste. Add salt, pepper and 1/2 tsp mustard powder, now add 1c half and half (cream) and 1 and half cups milk- stir over med-high heat until mixture thickens and boils. Add in 2 and half cups shredded Mexican style cheese. Mix in 8oz cooked macaroni. Place in a buttered casserole dish and top with PANKO bread crumbs and 1c more cheese. Bake at 375 for 35-40 minutes. ENJOY!

*a small note: do y’all prefer the step by step photos? I haven’t done them lately- mainly b/c I get annoyed at scrolling down on other sites to how the finished product looks. I assume you guys all know what chopped onions look like, right? Anyway,  I value your input, so if you like the step by steps I will gladly post them.  As for now, if it is an imperative pic I will show ya it. Unless ya tell me otherwise! love, MK

  • I’ll try not to annoy you! LOL! This Mac and Cheese does look cheesily delicious!

  • That looks so good. I prefer just a picture of the finished product. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the comments! Keep em coming! They make my day!

  • This looks great! I use mustard powder in mine too but milk, will have to try it with the cream. Also Will have to do the bread crumbs on top too. My family will not wait for it to bake and eat it right from the pot sans baking. I think it is prettier baked. Just had some mac and cheese at a party and the guy put fresh ground nutmeg in it, which I think sounds nice too! I am with you, sometimes step by step is good and sometimes it is not, depends on the recipe.

I think step by step is helpful when you are doing something a little difficult like making fondant or something like that. It is also helpful if you are describing an unusual ingredient that you are using but of course I am also a visual person. That mac and cheese looks amazing by the way!

  • I guess it depends on the photo. I agree that we all know how to cut onions and such. I like the finished product and I also like pictures of the food when a cut or scoop has been removed. OR better yet, when you lift a spoonful of lasagna and can see the cheese pull away. Make is all look like you could just take a bite!

  • This looks super yummy!! The picture makes my mouth water and I can’t wait to try it…. I just found your blog on the Foodie BlogRoll today and will definitely bookmark it for future reference. If you get a chance, I invite you to visit my humble blog at http://www.mealsforfriends.com. Cheers!

  • The mac & cheese looks awesome!! I agree with you on the step by step photos – I prefer just the finished product!

I am bookmarking this page so I can make this mac & cheese.

  • Personally I am an extremely visual person, and love step-by-step photos. Having said that though, if it is something easy that most people would know how to do, I guess it makes more sense to just show the end result. Anyhow, there is my 2 cents! =)

This mac & cheese looks divine! Such a classic comfort food.. YUM!
